‘Barbie’ actor Margot Robbie is said to have implemented a ‘pink dress code’ once a week during the production of the movie, where violators would be fined, said co-star Ryan Gosling in an interview with PEOPLE.
According to Gosling, who played Ken, “Margot had this pink day once a week, where everyone had to wear something pink. And if you didn’t, you were fined.”
He shared that Robbie would go around the set and would collect fines which were said to have been donated to a charity.
However, people online were divided over their opinion towards Robbie’s decision to implement such a rule and collect a fine for those who didn’t conform.
Others did see this as another quirky addition to everything that the ‘Barbie’ movie and production has to offer:
everything I know about this movie makes me happy https://t.co/iMVRN7qcEj

I had a friend who was VFX production manager on this film, and this was one of the first things he told me about it — wearing pink or not, you’d either have fun or donate to a good cause and I love that sm 😭❤️ https://t.co/RAKnp4japW

it seems pretty obvious to me that this is a lighthearted thing probably being jokingly exaggerated and not Margot Robbie extorting money from poor crew members https://t.co/SyPzoedH7S

Everyone upset about this yelling “what about the crew” has no idea what life is like as crew. We’ll often get requests on what to wear – strict show blacks, no certain brands, no logos, certain gear, no sports teams, etc. We do it, do the job, move on. https://t.co/4E7qDx1NO2

Some said that this rule is quite exploitative and insensitive:

really love when puff pieces/marketing anecdotes like this come out with the intention of making the actors seem QuIrKy and ReLaTabLe but is actually so transparently heinous if you’ve ever worked as below-the-line crew on a set https://t.co/DvOMd3C5Pe

imagine being an underpaid staff member and having margot robbie ask you for money bc you didn't wear pink i would genuinely beat her ass https://t.co/iuW7ug1reu

The crew might actually have been happy about it. Gosling shared that “what was really special was just how excited the male crew members were,” and at the end of the production, “they all got together and, with their own money, made pink crew shirts with rainbow fringe,” he said.
Gosling added, “It was this opportunity for them to show their respect and admiration for what Margot and [director] Greta [Gerwig] were creating.”
