Tragic death of Chinese acrobat shocks Chinese social media

A video has been circulating online showing a tragic incident where a Chinese performer fell to her death, sparking shock across Chinese social media.

A Chinese acrobat died after falling to the stage while performing an aerial silks routine with her husband. The couple, identified as Sun Moumou and Zhang Momou, were being pulled high into the air by a crane when Sun lost her grip and fell to the hard stage below.

The shocking tragedy has sparked a wave of criticism and rage as many people were upset that there were no safety measures put in place, like a mat or a safety belt.

According to a Chinese media outlet, the couple was fighting before the show, and were told to put on safety lines when Sun allegedly refused.

Though the sad tragedy was ruled as an accident, an investigation found that Anhui Yaxi Performing Arts Media Company, which was contracted to run the performance, failed to get an approval or provide essential safety protections and emergency measures. The use of a crane itself in the performance was also found to be a violation of regulations. The company has agreed to compensate the Moumou family and will face punishment. Sun had been married to her husband for over a decade and left behind two children.

Meanwhile, according to The Paper, a state-run news website, a statement was announced before the show about performers not equipped with any safety measures, so the performance would make it look real.
