Brand of pencil sees surge in sales in Korea after appearing in a scene in ‘The Glory’

It’s not new for different fashion brands to become an integral part in some scenes in Korean dramas.  But it’s somewhat unusual for a pencil to rise in popularity–which is exactly what happened to Staedtler after one of its line of pencils was used as a fashion slash weapon accessory in the second part of the hit Korean series ‘The Glory’.

The German stationery brand’s iconic blue-and-black pencil Mars Lumograph, typically used for drawings and illustrations, went viral following the infamous stabbing scene between the drug-addicted artist Lee Sa Ra (played by Kim Hieora) and flight attendant Choi Hye Jeong (played by Cha Joo Young).

In the said scene, the antagonist characters Sa Ra and Hye Jeong get into a serious feud. Suddenly, Sa Ra pulls out the pencil that was used to hold her hair up and jabs Hye Jeong in the neck. Regardless of the violent stunt, many viewers were hooked by the outstanding product placement.

It is unclear if Staedtler paid for this incidental advertising to happen in the series.

Based on a media report, Staedtler pencils are now sold out in South Korea after being featured in the newest drama.

Internet users reacted to the news and compared the scene to Keanu Reeves’ popular move in the second chapter of his movie, ‘John Wick’ where he assassinated three people using a pencil.

However, some people on the internet are expressing concerns that cases of using a pencil as an assault weapon might arise after airing The Glory Scene on streaming platforms.

Despite the mixed responses, ‘The Glory’ fans are waiting for more surprise drops and thrilling moments that the characters will face.
