Google launches Bard, the newest OpenAI’s ChatGPT rival

At this point, you’ve probably heard of ChatGPT, the AI-powered chatbot that allows you to have human-like conversations with a machine. After OpenAI’s natural language processing tool was introduced to the public, it quickly gained the interest of digital natives. Following with the viral success of ChatGPT, Google has unveiled what they consider to be ChatGPT’s rival, “Bard,” its newest conversational technology.

On February 6, the CEO of Google and parent company Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, announced in a blog post that the newly launched AI chatbot “Bard” would be accessible to the general public in the coming weeks. Similar to Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s chatbot, Google’s Bard is built on a huge language model system. These models are tested on massive troves of data online to yield clear responses to user prompts.

Pichai wrote that their team translates thorough research and breakthroughs into innovative products that truly help people, and that’s the mission Google has been on with its vast language models.

“We’ve been working on an experimental conversational AI service, powered by LaMDA, that we’re calling Bard. And today, we’re taking another step forward by opening it up to trusted testers ahead of making it more widely available to the public in the coming weeks,” he said.

Google’s CEO explained that Bard will combine the world’s sets of knowledge to their extent with the power, creativity, and intelligence of their big language models. The newly-launched chatbot will serve as a tool for curiosities, helping its users to explain discoveries and build their skills in different aspects. From planning a road trip to deciding what car to buy, Bard is ready to answer almost all of your queries.

Two years ago, the tech giant uncovered next-generation language and conversation capacities powered by Language Model for Dialogue Applications or LaMDA. Today, Google is taking a step forward by releasing Bard with its smaller version of LaMDA as the lightweight model requires less computing power that allows reaching out to more users.

‘We’ll combine external feedback with our own internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety, and groundedness in real-world information,’ Pichai added.

In 2022, Google’s management declared a ‘code red’ risk for its search business due to the growing attention given to ChatGPT by Internet users. Following the popularity of the said AI chatbot, Google is now ready to update its AI venture through Bard.

Shortly after Google’s announcement, Microsoft OpenAI’s GPT held an event declaring a new feature for the said chatbot—marking the start of an AI rivalry between these tech giants.
