NewJeans’ debut track ‘Cookie’ gets mixed reviews for its ‘iffy’ lyrics

ADOR’s first-ever girl group, NewJeans is here with their first EP!

Introduced and launched into the music industry unexpectedly by ADOR last July 22 with their track “Attention”, NewJeans already got the public hooked and excited for their self-titled debut EP release on August 1, 2022.

NewJeans’ EP consists of 4 tracks—“Attention”, “Hype Boy”, “Hurt”, which had all been pre-released with music videos, and “Cookie”. “Cookie” is described as a “dance-pop song with adorable lyrics,” with NewJeans themselves explaining how “a cookie can be used to persuade the person they like into approaching them first.”

Though the lyrics look seemingly innocent and appropriate for their age, some international K-Pop stans beg to differ. Others even connected ADOR’s CEO Min Hee-jin’s recent pedophile accusations.

There are also others who think the contrary, with most Korean netizens believing that the girls’ lyrics were age-appropriate and were even funny. Some also believe that this was a mistranslation issue, considering that some words aren’t the same once translated.

With NewJeans’ ages ranging from 14 (born 2008) to 18 (born 2004), it’s no mistake that fans are just concerned about these teenagers singing lyrics filled with (possible) sexual innuendos. With the girls’ themselves saying that the cookie they’re singing about in their song is their music, and how they want their fans to “eat it all up”, we won’t really know for sure if the lyrics were inappropriate or not.

What do you think, are the lyrics to “Cookie” inappropriate or just okay for NewJeans’ ages?
