The 1994 American dramedy film Forrest Gump is a well-known Tom Hanks classic, the origin of the iconic line, “‘Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.”
Life is indeed a box of chocolates, because — surprise! –who knew we’d get a Forrest Gump remake soon? Forrest Gump may be coming back to the big screens, but through an Indian remake.
The upcoming dramedy film Laal Singh Chaddha is an Indian Hindi-language adaptation of the 1994 Tom Hanks classic, which in itself was actually also an adaptation. The 1994 film Forrest Gump was adapted from Winston Groom’s novel of the same name, which was released in 1986.
The trailer for Laal Singh Chaddha was released last Sunday at the Indian Premier League (IPL) finale. Check out the trailer below:
Laal Singh Chaddha is an Indian Hindi-language version of Tom Hanks’ 1994 Best Picture winner Forrest Gump, so it’s a retelling of the story but “through the lens of India’s modern history and culture.”
The synopsis of Laal Singh Chaddha is as follows: “With a childhood marked by a unique bond between Laal and his single mother, tempered with strong values, the story follows Laal’s journey of love, innocence, and destiny as he triumphs over life’s many challenges. As he wins the hearts of those he meets along the way, he reminds us that everyone, even the most unlikely of people, has a story.”
Aamir Khan will play Laal (the film’s version of Forrest Gump), while Kareena Kapoor Khan will play Rupa (the film’s version of Jenny Curran). Meanwhile, Mona Singh plays Laal’s devoted mother, a character Sally Field portrayed in Forrest Gump.
Laal Singh Chaddha is directed by Advait Chandan and was co-produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Kiran Rao, and Viacom18 Studios in collaboration with Paramount Pictures. It will be released on August 11, 2022. /TV
