A new 1000 peso bill went into circulation last April 22. The new banknote’s notable characteristic is that it is made from polymer material.
According to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, polymer bills can be sanitized with less risk of damage compared to traditional paper bills. The BSP did this because of public health and safety concerns due to COVID. These polymer bills are also much more durable than paper bills are resistant to water, oil, dirt, and wear and tear. It also has a small carbon footprint as it requires fewer resources to produce.
The new 1000 peso bill also looks significantly different from the current one, as the faces of World War II heroes Jose Abad Santos, Vicente Lim, and Josefa Llanes Escoda are now replaced with the image of the Philippine eagle. The current 1000 peso bill featuring the three Filipino heroes will still be printed and will not be out of circulation though.
People on social media reacted to this change, with many praising the new aesthetics of the bill. Some are also praising the addition of the five highly embossed dots on the bill to help the visually challenged identify the bill using braille.

Wow the new 1000 peso bill looks so much better and even has braille. I remember my seniors from uni had a proposal to incorporate braille system in our money bills. Not just aesthetically pleasing but also incorporated the principles of Usability pic.twitter.com/l3W9TDMGYL

On the other hand, some find that replacing the heroes of the second world war with an animal is disrespectful to the history of the country and those heroes’ sacrifices. Still, the new bill will still co-exist with the current one.
