Here’s why ‘We Don’t Talk About Bruno’ wasn’t submitted for Oscars 2022

Everyone has indeed been talking about Bruno – whether the Madrigals like it or not. That’s why Encanto fans have been curious as to why “Dos Oruguitas” was nominated for Best Original Song instead of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” for this year’s Academy Awards.

Encanto’s acclaimed songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda actually had a little bit of explaining to do regarding this turn of events.

In a recent podcast of Variety Awards Circuit, Miranda reveals the reason for the absence of hit song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” for Best Original Song nomination. The songwriter justified that he never assumed the song would receive this much hype and love from audiences.

Miranda expounded that the submission for the Oscars was slated before Encanto’s premiere took place, unexpectant of what’s to come for the movie soundtrack. Moreover, the award-winning songwriter cogitated that “Dos Oruguitas” was the song that’s more suited for the film’s overall narrative and how it succinctly encapsulates its theme.

The Academy’s guidelines also specified that only two songs from a film can be nominated for the category.

“I’m still proud of ‘Dos Oruguitas’ as the submission. When those are the parameters, you have to pick the thing that best exemplifies the spirit of the movie, and it contains all of it inside this song – as opposed to a journey of a particular character. It’s the foundational story, but I’m not going to say it wasn’t hard [to choose],” – Lin-Manuel Miranda

Encanto’s popularity indeed hit the roof after being released on more streaming platforms, gaining fans from all over the world. This led to the film’s brimming success as well as its original soundtrack.

Meanwhile, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” had exhibited its dominating popularity from being the most streamed song out of all the said film’s tracks on Spotify with over 162 million number of streams. It also has the highest number of YouTube views reaching a total of 250 million just from a month since its release.

Miranda had conveyed his gratitude for the overwhelming love and support obtained by Encanto and most importantly the unrelenting appreciation for the film’s beloved songs.

“Dos Oruguitas” earned the songwriter his second nomination for the Best Original Song category, following Moana’s “How Far I’ll Go” nomination in 2017.
