From his devilishly sexy role as Lucifer Morningstar in the hit show Lucifer, Tom Ellis dives into a new TV role for the limited television series Washington Black, which is currently slated for production. The show is an adaptation of the 2018 coming-of-age novel of the same name by Esi Edugyan, which follows the story of 11-year-old George Washington “Wash” Black.
He will be working with This Is Us actor Sterling K. Brown, who is also an executive producer of the series together with Twilight Zone writer Selwyn Seyfu Hinds. Ellis announced the good news on his official Instagram account, stating that he is “beyond thrilled” to be part of this latest project.
The star will be taking on the role of Christopher “Titch” Wilde, an “eccentric, passionate steampunk inventor whose youthful enthusiasm masks an inner vulnerability”, according to Deadline. Titch will be serving as a mentor and father figure to titular character Wash, who will be played by Ernest Kingsley Jr. Washington Black tells the story of an 11-year-old whose life changes after a death in a sugar plantation owned by Titch’s family. He then serves as a manservant to the man himself. The novel was well-praised for its exploration of love, compassion and freedom in times of cruelty and slavery.
Aside from being an executive producer, Sterling K. Brown also plays the role of Medwin Harris, a former refugee who also serves as a mentor to Wash. Other actors confirmed to star in the series are Iola Evans, Edward Bluemel and Sharon Duncan-Brewster.
This is Ellis’ newest TV role after his six-season portrayal in Lucifer, which ended its run last year with the showrunners wanting a good wrap-up for the series. He also stars alongside Jane the Virgin actress Gina Rodriguez in the romantic-comedy film Players, which is set to be released this year.
