People meme about Facebook again as it changes its name to Meta

Barely a month since Facebook’s hours-long outage that resulted in a meme-fest, the platform has once again become the subject of memes after the company announced that it will be changing its name to Meta.

Company CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement on Thursday at the Facebook Connect augmented and virtual reality conference. The name Meta is based on the sci-fi term “metaverse,” and the new name was chosen to represent and show the company’s vision for building a shared virtual environment.

Zuckerberg added that the name Meta also represents the idea that over time, the company’s other apps and services will all be united under one brand, so eventually users will no longer have to use Facebook to be able to access and use the company’s other services.

Facebook’s move to rebrand is made amidst controversy. Whistleblower and former Facebook employee Frances Haugen had leaked documents that she claimed to be proof of the company’s choosing profit over user safety. Zuckerberg spoke up regarding the leaked documents, saying that they were being used to paint a “false picture” of the company.

People were quick to poke fun at Facebook’s decision to rebrand despite currently facing several issues, resulting in a series of memes about the company opting to just change its name instead of taking action to fix its issues.

Aside from changing Facebook’s name to Meta, the company also revealed a new logo to match the new name Meta. The new logo for Meta is a blue infinity shape, replacing Facebook’s thumbs-up “Like” logo. Netizens have also taken to social media to poke fun at the company’s new name and logo.
