Not lip-syncing? Grande and Gillies sing live in clip of ‘Victorious’ shoot

If you were a Nickelodeon kid, you’ve probably heard of the teen sitcom Victorious. It’s been eight years since the series aired its final episode, but it’s still popular today, especially since you can binge-watch all four seasons on Netflix.

The sitcom follows the story of Tori Vega (Victoria Justice), who gets accepted into Hollywood Arts High School. It’s a performing arts high school, so naturally the series involved a lot of singing.

Among the cast were Ariana Grande and Elizabeth Gillies, both of whom portrayed characters who also went to Hollywood Arts High and befriended Tori. Grande portrayed the sweet and optimistic Cat Valentine, while Gillies took on the role of the sarcastic and tough Jade West.

Although Gillies and Grande’s characters had contrasting personalities, Jade and Cat were actually best friends and got along as though they were sisters. One of the show’s many songs is “Give it Up,” which was sung by Jade and Cat in a duet.

Most people believed that the actors were lip-syncing for the songs when they were filming the sitcom, because realistically speaking it’s probably difficult to pull off live performances of the songs in the show. However, a post by Twitter user @leamelonely shows a clip of the shoot for the “Give it Up” number and it might be proof that Gillies and Grande weren’t actually lip-syncing on set when they were recording the scene.

In the clip, Gillies and Grande are in character as Jade and Cat, singing “Give it Up” a capella as they strut to the front of the stage like they do in the scene during the show. “THEY WEREN’T LIP SYNCING???” Twitter user @leamelonely wrote.

Another Twitter user replied saying that for the show the actors might have actually been singing when they were filming the sitcom but they were muted and had the recordings of the songs placed over their singing.

That is also a possibility — maybe the actors were actually singing while filming but the song recordings were used instead. Either way, the songs were actually sung by the actors themselves, so lip-syncing or not, Victorious really showed just how talented the actors are in acting and singing.
