Remembering Kim Min Kyung, the ‘Eomma’ in some of our fave K-Dramas

Seasoned actress Kim Min Kyung has passed away. She was 61 years old.

This was announced and confirmed by her agency, DaHong Entertainment on August 17, 2021, stating that she had passed away the day before in a Seoul hospital, and that her funeral will take place on August 18, 2021.  Her cause of death was not disclosed by her agency.

Known for acting in the roles of “long-suffering but understanding mothers”, Kim Min Kyung made her acting debut back in 1979 through a theatrical troupe and had numerous projects throughout her whole career. Her over 40-year career spanned stage, television, and movie projects. She had also won the “Newcomer Award” at the Korea Theater Festival in 1981.

If you’re an avid K-Drama fan, then you might have seen her portraying the “eomma” roles. She played as Court Lady Min in “Moon Embracing the Sun”, a mother in “When the Camellia Blooms”, and most recently, Oh Mi Soon in “Mouse”.

Some of her movies include Someone Behind You (2007), Where the Truth Lies (2009), Microhabitat (2017), and most recently, A Good Supper (2021) and Pipeline (2021). Kim Min Kyung also played a role in upcoming crime thriller movie Spiritwalker, which won an award at the recently concluded New York Asian Film Festival and will be released later this year.

Rest In Peace, eomma Kim Min Kyung.
