As Texas recovers from a historic winter storm, it looks like some people have decided that the best way to survive is by putting on a tin foil hat — claiming that the snow is actually “fake.”
TikTok users have been spreading a conspiracy theory that it’s a government plot to convince conservatives that climate change is real. Would their leaders actually let the state suffer through a power outage just to make a point? Why don’t they instead call out right-wing Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who conveniently fled to Cancun before the snow got worse?
One user says that if Trump was still in office it would be spring. He believes it’s “government snow,” because it doesn’t make your hands wet. But you have to understand that not all snow is created equal. According to The Weather Channel, the texture depends on the temperature and liquid content.

In another video, a TikTok user is seen using a blow dryer on a snowball and being shocked to find that it wasn’t melting. The TikTok has over 290,000 views as of writing, but comments have been disabled. The same user has three other videos on her page attempting to prove her theory by lighting match sticks and candles.
@sarahmojo Someone said do it with a blow dryer #fyp #snowwontmelt #whatshappening #texasblizzard #centraltexas #conspiracytheories #helpmeunderstand
And of course, science has a very logical and valid explanation for this. An astronomer and science blogger Phil Plait, explains that snow does melt but it doesn’t appear to drip because the remaining snow absorbs the water. Another explanation is that it could also be undergoing sublimation, the process of snow and ice changing into water vapor in the air.
Don’t forget your science lessons, kids.
