Youth-led organizations, UP Pre-Medical Society and Labang Pangkalusugan, have partnered up and announced the launch of their month-long mental health campaign, KAPWA, in order to raise awareness on pressing mental health issues remote learning has brought upon struggling students. Featuring a variety of speakers from legislators advocating for mental health, such as Rep. Sarah Elago, to psychiatrists and other experts in the field, the main event of the mental health campaign is a panel webinar happening on October 17, 2020 from 3:30pm to 6:00 pm, free and open to all. With the onset of online learning, KAPWA aims to remind the youth, specifically high school and college students, of the importance of mental health through digestible and informative publication materials on self-care, and a webinar on the intersectionality of mental health with other societal facets, as well as how to take care of oneself in the context of society today. Inspired by the Kapwa Theory in Filipino psychology, KAPWA is grounded in our shared sense of self and the importance of pakikipagkapwa, the practice of extending help to those around us who are in need. It is now more than ever when we need to take care of ourselves, and break the stigma surrounding mental health in Filipino society.
This mental health campaign was launched by UP Pre-Medical Society (UP PMS) and Labang Pangkalusugan (LP). With 64 years of experience, UP PMS is an organization led by students from UP Diliman, and best known for their community-based activities that provide aid to the UP community and various local foundations. They have successfully organized various cash drives and relief operations dedicated to providing food and relief to healthcare workers and communities-in-need. Meanwhile, LP is a health organization led by college students that aims to bridge gaps of inequality in health education. Apart from their online presence in health information, they have also donated thousands of PPE to healthcare workers, raised funds for over a hundred rt-PCR test kits to be donated to public hospitals nationwide, and hosted a successful COVID-19 Webinar Series, Tanglaw.
