Can you handle a winter of bushy brows for the sake of summer brow perfection? That is the latest no-pain-no-gain beauty trend to emerge worldwide. It basically involves stashing your tweezers and canceling your beautician appointments for a few months in order to give your brows a new lease of life. Ready to give it a go?

Forget new technologies and other innovative beauty procedures (well, almost), as natural techniques seem to be coming back into fashion, meaning you can stay looking great with minimal effort. That’s what’s new in the world of eyebrow grooming, where the “brow hibernation” trend is encouraging people to leave their brows untouched during the winter months. It is a kind of rest period from plucking, shaping and other grooming techniques by letting brows grow back naturally to give them a boost.

Why now?

The idea seems so simple that you almost wonder why it’s only just gaining ground. The wider trends of natural beauty and going back to basics, not to mention the acceptance of bushier brows, are no doubt driving forces, but not as much as the lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Like many current trends, these periods of physical distancing imposed worldwide have changed the game in many ways, making wearing masks and working from home the new norms in certain countries, for example. This has, in turn, led to new quirks and behaviors.

Just look at the slew of beauty challenges that sprouted up everywhere during the pandemic, starting with leaving brows to grow back (especially since beauty salons were closed), plus learning to cut your own bangs or leaving gray hairs untouched. These simple things seem to have outlasted the lockdowns too, as the “brow hibernation” trend shows.

That is what Leigh Blackwell, founder of The London Brow Company, recently confirmed to Glamour U.K.: “Now that we have given our brows a head start over lockdown, it will be so much easier to go into brow hibernation over winter.”

“Winter is the best time of the year to rejuvenate your brows; we all know gorgeous summer brows are created in the winter so put your brows to bed over the winter, hide your tweezers and let them grow,” the specialist added.

So, now you know what you need to do to boost your brows.

One slight problem

The trend comes as many influencers and other celebrities have been confidently rocking bushy brows, sometimes even monobrows. Examples include the star of the hit new Netflix show “Emily in Paris”, in which Emily Cooper, played by Lily Collins, has a particularly full set of eyebrows.

Cara Delevingne is also something of a trailblazer in the field. In any case, eyebrow grooming trends seem to be heading in this direction, with specialist brands now offering all kinds of pens, brushes and other tools to help create a thicker look.

Still, thick brows are not the same as bushy or messy brows left completely untamed. That could take some getting used to at a time when eyes are more than ever the focal point of the face. Indeed, wearing a mask tends to encourage people to invest more time and effort in how their eyes are looking. So just how many people will be ready to sacrifice their perfectly preened eyebrows?
