Will 2020 be marked by the rise of the visible thong?

Are visible thongs about to become the new fashion orthodoxy? Several internationally renowned models like Bella Hadid and Izabel Goulart appear to be taking the trend seriously, parading on social networks with microscopic underwear on show. The main idea of this look, which could soon be the last word in casual elegance, is to have the fine waistband of the said garment visible over the hips when wearing jeans or sweatpants.

Sometimes the sight of one celebrity wearing an unexpected garment is enough to rock the fashion sphere to the point where it becomes “The” trend of the moment. And on occasion, the looks and pieces in question are a bit out there for ‘normal’ daily wear.

In 2018, for example, Kim Kardashian blazed the trail for the remarkable comeback of cycling shorts. And she was not only followed by hoards of women from all over the world, the craze was also endorsed by major designers who began to show the skin-tight legwear in collections for the most prestigious labels.

Thongs poised to make a major comeback

Today, the return of the thong appears to be highly likely, and those who naively assumed that the skimpy undergarment would never again see the light of day may well be proved wrong.

Largely under the radar in recent years, which have mainly been marked by the popularity of boy shorts, the trend for thongs is already gaining ground on social networks with a vanguard of celebrities boldly leading the way. Given that this Instagram elite is almost always a few steps ahead of everyone else when it comes to new fashions, the overwhelming likelihood is that 2020 will be remembered as the year of the thong.

Be warned, however: the mere fact of buying a few thongs will not set you at the heights of fashion. The manner of wearing this minimalist underwear in 2020 is not at all the same as it was five years ago. In short, every generation wants a thong look that is entirely its own, and the one that is now on the horizon is daringly bold because it involves showing off quite a lot of the skimpy garment.

On social networks, the likes of Bella Hadid, Kylie Jenner, Izabel Goulart and Doja Cat, among others, have all posted pictures showing super-fine thong waistbands hiked up over their hips. This in itself is not new because the same models, influencers, and rappers all joined in the recent swimwear trend for ultra-high-cut bikini bottoms. But there the comparison ends, because it is one thing to wear a skimpy swimsuit on a beach and quite another to show off your underwear downtown.

It remains to be seen if this trend will be embraced by mere mortals with fewer than a million followers. And if it does become a craze, it is hard to imagine how it will square with the much-anticipated return of fashion classics prompted by the health crisis.

Perhaps regulations that oblige people to wear masks in public, which are now in force in many countries around the world, will encourage women to draw attention to other scraps of fabric that are worn elsewhere. We will simply have to wait and see. CC
