Over 2 million Filipinos lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Most of them are minimum-wage earners or breadwinners who are now required to stay home without any income to feed their families. If some are forced to go out to look for food, everyone loses. Every Filipino needs to help each other stay at home so we can all get this over with.
The Rice Movement is an initiative that started in Cebu, led by Albert Padin, a technopreneur who lost his father to COVID. Seeing how the health crisis is affecting people from different walks of life, he was inspired to do something to help those most affected by this situation. Together with his team of volunteers from the community, they are raising funds to buy rice for these displaced workers so they can survive staying at home at this challenging time.
As of May 23, 2020, they have already purchased and delivered 588 sacks of rice for 2,375 family members of displaced workers around Cebu, Manila, and Bacolod. These families can now survive staying safe at home for at least a month. The Rice Movement wants to be able to help more families and to make this possible, they are knocking on the generous hearts of the community to donate so they can purchase more rice and deliver it to more families.
