Foxela and Chelsea Cara share the story behind their new single ‘wanted you so bad’

Singapore-based electronic producer Foxela teams up with pop singer-songwriter Chelsea Cara on the tropical anthem “wanted you so bad.”

Released under Umami Records SG, the song glides with effortless cool and sparsely rhythmic beats, and serves as a perfect summer soundtrack. It’s also the second collaboration featuring the two promising stars; the first, ‘Live On’, was released earlier this year.

We caught up with Foxela and Chealsea Cara in an email interview, where the duo shared their insights on the brand new single, creative process in terms of songwriting and production, and upcoming plans for the rest of the 2020.

What is the story behind your new single ‘wanted you so bad’?

Chelsea: It’s about a girl who’s been rejected by a guy she really likes and she faces the dilemma of either moving on or waiting for him to like her back eventually. This song explores that concept, her feelings in that situation and her feelings towards the guy she likes.

Please share with us more on the creative collaboration process for ‘wanted you so bad’. Also, are you guys planning to collaborate more in the future?

Foxela: The process was really simple really. Chelsea sent me a little demo that was meant for school and I instantly saw the potential in it. I took the acapella and whipped up the instrumental in about 2 days! We took a while to settle all the tiny details but that’s how our process went. Chelsea is one of the best singers that I know of and I’ll definitely work with her more in the future!

Chelsea:It started out as a school project where we were supposed to write a song about literally anything so i wrote and produced a demo and sent it to Nigel. Initially, it wasn’t because i wanted to collaborate with him for the project but we always send each other tracks that we created and hype each other up about it. After sending it to him, he said that it legitimately had the potential to be a release so i decided why not and eventually, dropped it for my school project and keep to ourselves instead. I’ve collaborated with Nigel a couple times before and i can definitely say he’s my favourite producer to work with so i am hundred percent down to collaborate more with him in the future!

What was the inspiration behind the song lyrics and/or the production?

Foxela: I’ve always admired production styles like this- such as ‘Trouble’ like R3HAB. What’s great about this style is that it’s perfect for all moods! Whether you’re happy or sad, or even when you feel like partying, this song would fit your playlist. That’s how ‘wanted u so bad’ came about!

Chelsea: On my part for the songwriting, i was writing it straight from personal experience when the rejection happened one or two days ago so the feelings were still fresh and lyrics came flowing out of me naturally.

What did you want to share with your audience through this song?

Chelsea: This song isn’t meant to be a lesson or anything but more of a way to write what some people might feel when their crush rejects them. It’s not always the usual situation of just accepting it and moving on but when it’s a person you genuinely like inside out and you could actually see a relationship potentially blossoming between the both of you, why would you want to give up so easily and move on? So i’m simply writing the feelings and thoughts my audience could have who experienced a similar situation and still bop to it 🙂

What are your upcoming music plans for 2020?

Foxela: I’ll be putting out a lot of music in 2020- I have sooooo many ideas prepared! Also I’ll be turning 18 soon so I’m really hoping to be able to get some shows too.

Chelsea: As of now, i have no clear upcoming music plans for the year but you will definitely hear more from me soon and i can’t wait to show you what i’ve got as an upcoming singer-songwriter.
