Dating app advises to maintain ‘social distance’ amidst coronavirus scare

Anyone who’s ever tried online dating would know that Tinder is one of those apps that is infamous for hook-ups. In fact, the social media platform even teaches its users how you can “date when you’re not looking for a relationship” in their Swipe Life blog. However, with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) slowly evolving into a global pandemic, the dating app is now advising users to maintain a “social distance” when they meet up with their matches.

Online users have noticed that when they swiped left or right for potential partners, the app would prompt them with this message: “Your wellbeing is our #1 priority. Tinder is a great place to meet new people. While we want to continue to have fun, protecting yourself from the Coronavirus is more important. Here are some safety tips: wash your hands frequently, carry hand sanitizer, avoid touching your face, and maintain social distance in public gatherings.”

The message is then followed with a hyperlink that relays people to the World Health Organization (WHO) website to know more about the virus.

Although it is good that the company is taking the necessary steps to protect its customers, it came off somewhat strange to people that an app–known for dating and hook-ups–would advise distancing one’s self from other people.

Twitter users went online to share their surprise over the message. One person tweeted, “Tinder out here protecting me from coronavirus more than they’re protecting me from bad pickup lines and weirdos.” While another wrote, “Tinder doing Coronavirus warnings, shit just got real.”

Truthfully, we applaud the dating company for taking initiatives to protect the well-being of its customers. And we hope that these app users heed the warning and remember, safety first!
