Just in case you’re wondering what Akon is up to lately, he’s busy working on his “futuristic city” in Senegal, West Africa. On Monday, the Senegalese-American singer announced on Twitter that his city project has finally signed a deal with the country’s government.

According to multiple sources, the 2,000-acre land (where the Akon City will be built) was given to him as a gift by the President of Senegal, Macky Sall. During his first announced plans in 2018, Akon pledged that it would become an eco-tourism destination, rely on renewable energy, and have its own airport.
Committed to making Africa a better nation, Akon mentioned in his previous interview with Nick Cannon that he wanted to build a city that is not just futuristic but innovative, as well. And part of his outlined plans is to launch “Akoin,” a cryptocurrency under the Akoin Ecosystem that aims to “empower youth entrepreneurship, economic stability, and growth across Africa and the world.”
After news about Akon signing a tourism deal in his homeland circulated the Internet, Twitter users can’t believe that Akon City is really happening:

This is how legends are made 🤷🏽♂️
From Senegal, West Africa to St Louis, Missouri 🎶
Then back to Senegal to create Akon City. If that’s not freedom, I wonder what is 🤷🏽♂️#Akon #Freedom #lit #doingitbig #respect

Before Akon City, the 46-year-old singer also founded and grew Akon Lighting Africa with the help of global entrepreneurs like Samba Bathily and Thione Niang. This project, which started in 2014, aimed to provide solar power solutions throughout 18 African countries.
He might not have released a new album yet, but it seems like he has been using his power, fame, and money to good use!
