Here are some friendly reminders to keep your pets safe during New Year’s Eve

While revelers marvel at the spectacular fireworks scene during New Year’s Eve, animals like dogs (and even cats) suffer the most from the noise within their environment. Noise aversion or noise phobia is a widespread condition among canines that make them anxious or fearful of extremely loud noises. When they get exposed to an unbearable noise level, their behavior suddenly changes—which pet owners should look out for—from pacing and excessive panting to trembling.

So before the clock strikes midnight, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society has helpful tips on how to keep your pets safe and trauma-free during New Year’s Eve:

1. Since dogs have a much more sensitive hearing than humans, encourage your family members to refrain from lighting up firecrackers and fireworks. Aside from that, they might lick off the explosive materials left on the ground—which is very dangerous when consumed.

2. When canines start getting anxious, their first inclination is to run away from shock. Just in case this scenario happens, always keep their collars and dog tags on at all times with your contact details.

3. Always ensure that your fences, gates, and front doors are closed.

4. It’s also best to give them the exercise, food, and water they need days or hours before the festivities. That way, they can just sleep rather than stress over it.

5. Always provide a safe room (with proper ventilation, of course) for your pets where it can’t get out. Aside from that, don’t forget to keep the windows closed to reduce the noise level in the room.

But there are also other ways that you can do to calm your pets. In an article published by Positively, playing soothing music, or commonly called as “sound therapy” can help them feel peaceful and relaxed. It’s also recommended to play the music before the festivities start until bedtime.

Alongside these helpful tips, we also encourage everyone to practice responsible pet ownership—no matter what the day is! Happy New Year, fur parents!
