A new Filipino superhero is on the rise in Marvel: Sea Hunter, who is joining Wave in her adventures in the “Aero” comics.
Like Wave, Sea Hunter looks like she is not to be messed with as she makes her first appearance in “Aero #3.” In a variant cover illustrated by Kael Ngu, the superhero is decked in a red metal suit riding on what appears to be a futuristic jet ski. She holds on to the Philippine flag while Wave stands proudly behind her with her sword.
Ngu featured the cover art on his Facebook page on Monday, Aug. 26. He credited Marvel exclusive artist Rachelle Rosenberg for the coloring.
A cover exclusive to the Philippines is also available, with art by Fil-Am comic book artist Whilce Portacio. The art pays homage to “Uncanny X-Men #282,” an issue which is close to Portacio’s heart because it features the first appearance of Bishop, whom he helped create. In his version of the “Aero #3” cover, Sea Hunter is at the center holding a flaming spear. To her left is Wave and to her right is Red Feather, a leader of Filipino superhero team Triumph Division.
The Filipino connection does not end there—a co-writer of the “Aero” comics is Asian-American Alyssa Wong, who is of Filipino descent.
The comics chronicle the adventures of Shanghai-based superhero Aero and Cebuana superhero Wave, whose powers are involved with air and water respectively.
