Escuela Taller partners with Mapua’s School of Architecture to hold seminar on heritage conservation

In line with one of the Program Educational Objectives of Mapua University’s School of Architecture, Industrial Design, and the Built Environment that is to develop of graduates with a keen sense of history and culture in line with the preservation of the architectural heritage of the country, Architectural Heritage Student Society and Escuela Taller will conduct a seminar entitled “SALIN 2019: Lecture Tour on Heritage Conservation” at Plenary Room, Mapúa University, on May 24, 2019, Friday, from 8:00am to 4:00pm.

The lecture series is part of the 10th anniversary of Escuela Taller which coincides with the National Heritage Month. It will provide a rich learning experience for students, faculty, as well as administrators on the knowledge Escuela Taller has gathered over the years while implementing its training program and heritage conservation projects. The topics to be discussed will focus on Escuela Taller’s training, documentation and assessment, heritage interpretation and presentation, interventions, and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management & preventive maintenance.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZERS

The Architectural Heritage Student Society is a university-based student organization that aims to uphold the principles of heritage protection and conservation by organizing and supporting educational tours, seminars, social events, and competitions. The organization believes that through active engagement in these activities, they will be able to foster cultural awareness and a better understanding of the importance of architectural heritage as a valuable asset of our nation.

The Escuela Taller de Filipinas Foundation, Inc. is organized in 2009 on the initiative of the Philippine and Spanish, governments, respectively through the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo (AECID). Their mission is to alleviate poverty by addressing the unemployment problems among the Filipino youth and at the same time, help in the recuperation, rehabilitation, and protection of Philippine tangible heritage.

ROSTER OF LECTURERS

The seminar will be presented by an esteemed group of lecturers who have been working closely under the various programs and projects of Escuela Taller. The line-up consists of Ar. Michael Querido, a BS Architecture graduate from PUP who handled the rehabilitation of San Agustin Church’s choir loft’s sillerias (choir stalls); Ar. Jeffrey Cobilla, a conservation architect who took up his bachelor’s degree in UP Diliman and has been experienced in several projects involving documentation and architectural mapping; Ar. Marlin Noah Gutierrez, a project coordinator of Escuela Taller for almost three years and has been documenting the on-going conservation works of Malate Church; Ar. Sarah Jane Pahimnayan, a member of Escuela Taller’s technical team and has actively participated in projects involving assessment and condition survey; Angeline Calurasan, a BS Tourism graduate of UP Diliman who currently manages the Jesuit House and Paco Park interpretation and presentation case study under Escuela Taller.  

Each lecturer is anticipated to present their hands-on experiences on their respective topics to synthesize Escuela Taller’s methodology towards the conservation of heritage structures from places all over the country.  The seminar is expected to be attended by 108 participants from the university’s student body and various members of the academe. Participants will be given a chance to have an open forum with the lecturers at the end of the program.
