LOOK: Barrettes are still fashion’s favorite hair accessory

When Chanel hit the catwalk in Paris last week to showcase its 2020 cruise collection, all eyes were on the models’ statement hair barrettes.

But the French house is not the only one currently championing the accessory, which has become almost ubiquitous on both red carpets and runways alike.

Chanel debuted branded hair slides in cool metallic tones, and leather and gold chain-link designs, using them to sweep the hair to one side and pin it securely, placing the accessory front and center of its beauty look.

Versace, too, used elaborate barrettes at its Fall/Winter 2019 ready-to-wear show earlier this year, opting for ornate slides in bejeweled tones modeled by famous faces like Gigi Hadid.

Celebrities have jumped on the trend, incorporating the onetime schoolgirl accessory into some of the most high-profile red carpet looks seen this year. Earlier this year, Kiki Layne put a star-shaped spin on the look at the Critics Choice Awards, proving that this is a trend you can take as seriously — or as playfully — as you like.

At this week’s Met Gala, supermodel Ashley Graham stacked Gucci-branded barrettes into her long ponytail for added attitude, while Ciara accessorized her towering ‘fro with emerald green pins. CE/JB
