Community Crafts Association of the Philippines, Inc. (CCAP) will hold the second edition of its trademark advocacy trade festival, Lokalakalan 2019: Kabuhayan, Kababaihan, Kalikasan, A Fair Trade and Social Enterprise Festival to Celebrate Women, on May 10 and 11 at the U.P. Town Center, Amphitheater Area. This event is co-presented by PLDT, Inc. with PAGCOR as Major Partner and UP Town Center as Venue Partner.
“This is a continuation to the success of the first Lokalakalan held last year with more brands, organizations, artists, and advocates this time,” says CCAP Executive Director Voltaire P. Alferez. ”With this festival, we celebrate the World Fair Trade Day and call on the soon-to-be-elected public officials to support community-based women artisans that continue, often unnoticed and underappreciated, the cultural and artistic heritage of the Philippines.” Fair Trade is a social movement originated from the West to promote better trading conditions among workers and farmers from developing countries such as the Philippines.
The trade festival will feature locally-made handicrafts and food products from several Fair Trade and Social Enterprise brands in the country. This also supports the government’s GoLokal campaign highlighting the many beautiful products of the country for the Filipino clientele.
There will also be a free upcycling workshop using old magazines facilitated by PAPEL Women Weavers of Tondo, one of the twenty-nine (29) partner communities of CCAP, and, a free Baybayin Calligraphy Workshop by Hibla Sanghabi, a known advocate and educator of Baybayin.
Philippine Coffee Alliance President, Vie Reyes will be one among those who will give a talk on women entrepreneurs. Local musicians such as UP’s Kontra Gapi, Mga Indie Buskeros ng Maynila, A Couple of Notes, and Luis & Nino Gragera are set to provide music and entertainment.
For 45 years since its inception on 1973, CCAP has taken huge strides to promote Fair Trade to improve the quality of lives of community-based handicraft artisans, especially those who belong in the marginalized communities – many of whom are women. In the past three (3) years, CCAP and its subsidiary CCAP Fairtrade has contributed around Php14 million to the local economies of the artisan partners boosting their way of life and adding to the progress of their communities.
“Aside from women empowerment and economic justice, this festival also aims to promote environmental protection – all of which are tenets of the Fair Trade movement.” Mr. Alferez added.
Community Crafts Association of the Philippines, Inc. (CCAP) and its marketing subsidiary, CCAP Fairtrade for Development, Inc. (CCAP Fairtrade) work with community-based artisans to develop fresh handicraft designs, market them abroad as well as in the local through its brand, Likhang Atin, and provides capacity-building for their improvement. CCAP Fairtrade is a Guaranteed Member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO).
