Welcome to Sunnyland Philippine Tour

There’s a reason Mayday Parade has always been among the Philippines’ crowd favorites—it’s rare for a band to make a connection with their fans, no matter where in the world they’re from, that’s strong and genuine enough to last more than a decade. It’s an even rarer sight when you see that connection grow ever stronger through the years, with every show and with every album release.

On June 15, 2018, Mayday Parade released their sixth album, Sunnyland, and opened a new chapter in their incredible journey as a band. “We just write the best songs we can,” bassist Jeremy Lenzo has shared with PULP Magazine in an exclusive interview, talking about their latest offering which was released through Rise Records. “I think a lot of those songs this time around just happened to be recounting memories from when we were younger.”

Sunnyland, after which the album was named, was an old, abandoned psychiatric hospital that somehow provided the backdrop to experiences from their youth that inspired songs on the album. The hospital has long been demolished, but Mayday Parade is able to take us back to that certain point in time with songs like “Never Sure,” “It’s Hard to Be Religious When Certain People Are Never Incinerated by Bolts of Lightning,” and “Piece Of Your Heart”—new anthems to take to heart from a band that fans have literally grown up with these past years.

Just last 2017, Mayday Parade brought their A Lesson in Romantics 10th Anniversary Tour to Manila, and we celebrated a decade of their classic, enduring anthems—songs that still resonate to this day. It was their biggest show in Manila yet, perhaps owing to everyone’s gravitation towards nostalgia. But unknown to most was that in the middle of the #ALIR10 World Tour craze, the band was also already working on fresh tunes. Here they were, celebrating a decade of a pivotal album in the band’s history in such a grand manner, all while planting their feet firmly in the present. It’s riveting how Mayday Parade can take us back to Sunnyland with the way the stories are told in these songs, and then take us back to the present with an album that sounds like a combination of all the things they’ve done before—a nice blend of all that we’ve known of Mayday Parade’s music that has a familiar sound, but still sounds new. Old tales in new tunes—this is what makes this band so timeless.

The Philippines has had the pleasure of seeing them more times than any other country in Southeast Asia, yet fans are always eagerly waiting for the next show. And every time Mayday Parade came back, they would play to a crowd larger than the last. This 2019, Mayday Parade is sure to see even more of their Filipino fans on the Welcome To Sunnyland Tour. Mayday Parade will be playing two legs of the tour in the Philippines, presented by PULP Live World: MANILA, and, for the very first time, CEBU! The first show is on May 3, 2019 (Friday) in Cebu, happening at the Sky Hall Seaside Cebu. The second leg follows on May 5, 2019 (Sunday) in Manila, at the New Frontier Theater, Cubao.

It’s no secret how much Mayday Parade appreciates their Filipino fans, and it’s no surprise that this time around, they’ve decided to reach more of their fans in the country. “There’s a certain kind of enthusiasm and energy that the crowds here [in the Philippines] have that’s pretty much unmatched everywhere else you go,” vocalist Derek Sanders told PULP Magazine in 2016, in recognition of the warm reception they’ve always experienced in the Philippines.
