Synopsis

‘From Today, It’s My Turn!!’ tells the story of two youthful boys determined to break the mold during their high school years.

One sharp-witted blond hell-bent to conquer the day and one spiky-haired fellow with a strong sense of justice come together and spring to life this one gag of a classic shounen comedy.

The Drama

Over the decades we have seen a generous amount of animation and live-action videos produced based from Nishimori-sensei’s narrative, but last year’s series by Nippon TV was the first full-blown drama version of the story.

Lead actor Kento Kaku, who portrays protagonist Takashi Mitsuhashi, said that while the mood and the visuals of the drama differ from the classic works, he is confident that he has remained true to the core of the material in his performances.

Despite the 11-year age gap between Kaku, 29, and his character Mitsuhashi, a high schooler around 17 or 18 years old, the actor said he didn’t feel “too foreign” about the light-hearted nature of the latter.

Kaku shared that he approached the work by stopping to read the manga and by “moving around the set” to connect better to his role and the entire environment surrounding it. With the aid of thorough mentorship from his director, Yuichi Fukuda, he eventually found the Mitsuhashi he wanted to portray.

Kaku credits Fukuda for his well-balanced leadership on set; he allows his actors to be playful when the scenario permits but he reprimands them for performances he deems lacking. But the overall good atmosphere that often surrounded the workplace helped the cast build bond that extended beyond work.

With this, we can expect yet another Japanese drama masterpiece that mirrors both the beauty and the inconvenient truths of life while highlighting how one can create a positive impact by facing day-to-day struggles with compassion and sincerity.

The series starring Kento Kaku, Kentaro Ito, Nana Seino, and Kanna Hashimoto premieres January 7, 2019 on GEM TV, with an airing schedule of 9 p.m. PST (8 p.m. JKT/BKK) every Monday and Tuesday.
