After almost two decades of building websites for local and international companies, August 99 is hosting Hack Manila 2018, its first-ever large-scale hackathon. Solo, duo, and team contenders have the chance to win prizes and gifts of up to ₱500,000 for the most innovative and best performing participants. It will be held on Saturday, November 17 to Sunday, November 18, at Loft’s coworking and events space at One Corporate Center in Ortigas.
Over the weekend, for 48 hours (from registration to closing ceremony), a group of dynamic hackers ranging from students to professionals from all across Metro Manila will engage in collaborative programming to produce a web, mobile, or hardware project from scratch. Enlisted as mentors and judges for the event are leaders, founders, and avid tech nerds that have the same goals in mind: to challenge emerging talents, to empower them to innovate and develop ground-breaking ideas, and to change the way we do tech. Among them are Tiger Bitanga, Bernd Rennebeck, Ken Reddy, Lynne Cawley, Chris Mitchell, Itamar Gero, Ruben Canlas Jr., Brian Tan Seng, Devlin Duldulao, Jason Acidre, and Rommel Peralta, to name a few.
“We want to raise the bar for our app developer community and there’s no better way to do that than to host a public event at our own coworking space. With hackathon mentors from different industries on over 3 different continents, plus over a dozen major sponsors, we’re excited to see what contestants can come up with in the span of 48 hours,” shares August 99 CEO Tiger Bitanga.
As the initiator of the hackathon, CTO Bernd Rennebeck adds that “Hack Manila is an organization that I created to promote best practices within the local web development community through engaging events and partnerships. Our inaugural event is a hackathon focusing on building real and relevant products within a short timeframe. I’ve personally gained so much from working with people in software engineering and web development and now I feel that I am in a position to give back to the community.”
Hack Manila has partnered with several brands to support the two-day hackathon that will accommodate over 150 participants, allowing the contenders to focus on producing their best work. Hack Manila 2018 is sponsored by August 99, Canstar, Real.ph, and Loft Spaces; presented by Digital Ocean, True Logic, GDG Cloud Manila, Nescafé, GCash, and San Miguel Beer; and in partnership with Eastern Communications, Red Bull, Dunkin’ Donuts, Power Mac Center, Sosro PH, The Smokeyard, Cuisine by Chef and Brewer, Oishi, Bounty Agro Ventures, and Kalibrr. Also joining Hack Manila as media partners are When In Manila (www.wheninmanila.com), Click The City (www.clickthecity.com), InqPOP! and INQUIRER.NET.
Qualified participants are invited to attend the Pre-Hackathon Orientation, where they can meet the mentors and learn more about the challenges set for the hackathon proper, on November 10th (Saturday) at the same Loft venue.
