Interracial family honors their Nigerian roots through fashion

In a world where Western cultures are mostly patronized and given attention to, we rarely see people and the media talk about the heritage and traditions of obscured cultures. For the McClure family, however, they make it a point to gorgeously highlight their Nigerian roots.

The family from New Jersey shared a beautiful family portrait of them wearing custom-made Nigerian outfits. The couple, Aminat and Justin McClure, wanted to pay homage to Aminat’s background.

The stunning outfits were made by Cameroonian designer Claude Kameni for the couple,  including their 4-year-old twin daughters Ava and Alexis, and their 7-month-old son Jersey. The outfits’ prints are inspired by West African designs.

“We just let [Kameni] do whatever she wanted as far as what she thought would fit best for our family,” Justin told TODAY. “As a Caucasian man, I embrace my family, I embrace my wife’s Nigerian culture.”

The couple also stressed the importance of letting their children be immersed in the gift of diversity.

“We wanted [our children] to take away how elegant they can be in anything, it doesn’t matter what culture they represent,” said Justin. “There’s a certain education you get from books, and there’s another education you get from experiencing the world, experiencing cultures.”

“We try to allow [our children] to embrace whatever culture they’re in, because with culture comes wisdom and sophistication.”
