Skincare 101: Your how-to guide to healthy-looking skin this Summer

Summer is the perfect time to explore under-the-sun activities like horseback riding, surfing, and hiking. But having prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to skin damage. And without proper precaution, this can later result in irreparable skin conditions.

According to studies, the sun’s Ultraviolet (UV) rays can cause sunburns, premature aging, and skin damaging — conditions that contribute to the development of skin cancer.

Fortunately, there are a few ways you can avoid these harmful effects. It all starts with these guidelines:

SPF is your friend

The Sun Protection Factor (SPF) present in many sunblock brands reportedly reduces the amount of UV radiation absorbed by the skin. This, in turn, delays the onset of sunburn and lessens the chances of developing major skin problems.

Skin experts suggest choosing a sunblock brand with a minimum SPF level of 15 and reapplying the product when needed.  This means before you go on any outdoor activity, you should apply a generous amount of sunscreen to the exposed areas of your body first and pack a travel-sized bottle for reapplication!

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

By drinking the right amount of water daily, you allow your skin to rid itself of toxins and maintain its moisture. This, in effect, slows down skin aging and makes your skin more elastic.

With the sweltering heat drying our skin, it becomes necessary to drink eight or more glasses of water every day to avoid the possible effect of dehydration on our skin. So remember, HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE!

Cleanse thoroughly

Not only does washing your face remove unwanted dirt from sweating, but it also cleanses the face and rejuvenates the skin for a much healthier look. So, it’s vital that you thoroughly wash your face every morning and evening of this summer season.

Sleep well

Lastly, sleep boosts blood flow to the skin and gives it a fresh glow upon waking. When you deprive yourself of the minimum hours of sleep, you prevent blood flow to the skin and consequently, leave it looking tired and lifeless.

This summer, be sure you get enough rest to maintain your skin’s radiant complexion. Remember: everyone needs their beauty sleep!
