Netizens diss whitening product’s commercial, shows support for fictitious soap that darkens skin

For Filipinos, it’s normal to see a commercial for skin whitening products almost everywhere. For years, we’ve been fed the notion that lighter skin equates to beauty  — when in reality, that’s not always the case.

Recently, a parody video about a soap bar that darkens skin rather than lightens it hit the internet… and netizens can’t seem to get enough of it!

“Pak Brownening Soap” is the fictitious product of the people behind Sutukil Sauce page on Facebook and it promises to give the soap user the perfect “sun-kissed” complexion in just one “wehk.”

The commercial for Pak Brownening soap was uploaded via social media last August 8, 2017. But it’s not stirring drama online for its adverse effects to whitening soaps. It’s becoming viral because a whitening product recently uploaded a commercial that’s strangely similar to that of Pak Brownening soap’s. See the comparison for yourself:

Many netizens have gone online to show their support for Pak Brownening soap using #SunKissedPaRinMgaUlol — a line in the soap’s jingle. Some brave netizens even went so far as to comment their thoughts on this in the whitening product’s Facebook page. Here’s what some of them had to say:

Whether you agree or disagree with the sentiments of these Facebook users, it seems like Pak Brownening soap has made its mark on the internet! And maybe we should internalize its satirical message that we should love the skin we’re born with
