Language has always been an integral part in every culture. Here, in the Philippines we have the so called “baybayin”, an old way of writing used by our ancient ancestors to easily communicate with one another. This was originally brought to us by our forefathers and has a huge part in our Filipino identity that makes us unique. But because of colonization and globalization, we somehow lost our identity and these legacies are gradually passing out of sight and replaced by popular colonial culture.

Recently, netizens were raving about this new mobile application called the Baybayin Keyboard developed by Christopher Castillo which lets the users type any word in baybayin using the ancient, indigenous script made by our ancestors. It also functions as an alternate system keyboard which you can use within other mobile applications such as Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Twitter, Instagram and Messages.

As stated in the app description, Baybayin Keyboard “has made a resurgence as a way to express Filipino cultural identity.” This app has two layouts — the Baguhan or the beginner and the Dalubhasa or the expert, a layout which you can use depending on your proficiency. This app is available for both android and IOS users.

No wonder why most of the netizens are promoting the use of this application to further learn our old alphabet and appreciate its beauty. It’s never too late to learn and understand our native script. Know. Familiarize. Practice.
