City Councilor in Tuguegarao faces backlash over alleged use of AI to write an opening prayer

Tuguegarao City Councilor Grace Arago faces backlash for reading a prayer with words that allegedly came from AI.

A generative artificial intelligence prompt was inadvertently incorporated in her opening prayer during the 9th City Council Regular Session last June 17.

Councilor Arago was apparently reading from a prepared text during the solemn opening prayer when she abruptly switched from the devotional lines to an AI text-generation command.

In the said prayer, she states, “May your Divine light shine upon us, guiding us in our endeavors, and filling our hearts with hope and inspiration.”

However, the next sentence quite disturbed those who have viewed the video as it is not a component of a prayer but rather a clear instruction to an AI model.

“Feel free to modify this prayer or tailor it to your specific needs and benefits,” she added.

This AI prompt’s unintended inclusion sparked reactions from Filipino social media users, with the video clip quickly going viral on social media.

One user wrote, “So this is a reflection of political leaders in Tuguegarao. How can she make a legislation with that level of intelligence?!? Nakakaawa [Pitiful]!”

Another user wrote, “Biglang itinigil [suddenly stopped] upon realizing it’s already an instruction from ChatGPT she is reading. Owaw!”

A third user wrote, “Well, requirement for them is to be able to read and write. Tama naman [That’s right], she knows how to read. She read everything pa nga [even], eh.”

“A simple prayer na nga lang, gumamit ka pa ng chatgpt. Paano na lng ung mismong trabaho mo bilang councilor, di lagi kang nakarely kay Chatgpt. Sayang ang boto ng mga taga-Tuguegarao sa iyo [Just a simple prayer, you still use chatgpt. What about your own work as a councilor, you don’t always rely on Chatgpt. It’s a waste of the people of Tuguegarao to vote for you]. What a shame!”, a fourth user wrote.

More users have shared their thoughts on social media, with some pointing out that the prayer she read was not sincere.
