JYP Entertainment issued an official statement on February 26, threatening serious legal action following reports of stalking incidents involving their artist group, TWICE. A so-called “fan” was allegedly behind the incident.
The intrusive behavior of the said fan involved sending indiscriminate letters and photos with inappropriate content, reflective of an unhealthy, obsessive behavior toward TWICE members. The unwanted actions had caused anxiety and great discomfort to the members as their security and personal boundaries had been crossed.
“These letters also mention how they have been loitering around TWICE’s workplace and residential areas continuously. This has caused severe psychological harm and anxiety not only to the artists but also to those around them,” JYP said.
Following this incident, JYP announced that they have tightened security measures surrounding TWICE members to ensure their safety. JYP furthered that they will “continue to closely monitor the situation.”
The agency reiterated that such actions are legally considered and defined as stalking under the laws of South Korea. Should this behavior persist, the involved individual will face necessary legal sanctions. “Therefore, the repeated sending of letters containing unsettling and unpleasant content, as well as loitering around the artists’ personal spaces against their will, are clear cases of ‘stalking behavior.’ Such acts can be severely punished under this law,” they said.
JYP stood firm on their ground that should the alleged fan continue to intrude and cross boundaries, they will not hesitate to take considerable legal actions. “If the individual does not immediately stop the aforementioned stalking behavior, we will take all possible legal actions available using the strongest methods, without any leniency or settlement.” JYP vowed that they will continue to protect their artists and has thanked genuine fans for their love and support for TWICE.
This is not the first time the girl group and other Korean artists have been plagued with stalkers. Back in 2020, TWICE member Nayeon and other members also faced threats from a stalker under the alias ‘Josh.’
