In a now-deleted Facebook post, Cristine Reyes made social media users feel conflicted about whether they should mourn the passing of ‘Meteor Garden’ actress Barbuie Hsu famously known as Shancai, or celebrate Reyes’ 36th birthday.
“Rest in peace, our childhood favorite. also, happy 36th bday sa akin ngayon araw na ‘to [happy birthday to me on this day] 2•5•25,” she wrote.
Hsu, who was perhaps one of the biggest stars of the 2000s for her role as Shan Cai, made Filipinos feel deeply for her untimely death last February 2. Various local celebrities had also paid tribute, reminiscing about fond memories of Hsu when she starred in ‘Meteor Garden.’
Reyes’ rest in peace and birthday post-in-one came two days after the passing of her childhood favorite actress, caught social media users by surprise and they could not help but blend in the typical Pinoy humor in the comment section.
Some even likened the incident to “Rico Jay Puno 2.0,” which referenced Jessie Mendiola’s bikini photo on her Instagram post with a caption, “R.I.P. Rico J Puno 🙏” from years ago.
Reyes’ post blew up on Facebook less than an hour later which garnered several reactions and comments given its glaring irony caught in between mourning or celebrating. However, the actress shortly took down the post which might have also come off as insensitive given the current circumstances of Hsu and her family.
The actress then took to Instagram to address the issue, subtly calling out the bashers with a remark: “Kailangan palaging perfect. Bawal magkamali nowadays. [Everything has to be perfect. Making mistakes is not allowed nowadays.]”
