TikTok user’s ‘hot take’ on Filipino food recommendation sparks debate on culinary identity

An X (formerly Twitter) user drew attention to a video of a TikTok user expressing their ‘hot take’ on what Filipino cuisine best represents Filipino culture.

With the caption, “who is this BURGEES,” the post showed a screenshot of the said video, in which they shared their opinion on how they’re sick of people recommending a famous childhood favorite fast food chain as “the testament [to] Filipino culture.”

The TikTok user then proceeded to recommend restaurants that will show “who we truly are at our healthiest and most abundant,” further citing that it’s the kind of food their mother served.

The  post generated a lot of replies, with people sharing their own opinions, as well as criticizing the “bourgeois” mindset the original uploader had.

A social media user even expressed how he would always recommend “balut, fishballs by the kanto, a Binondo food trip, a homemade meal at a friend’s place, or local beers at a nearby pub.”

Some defended the significance of the childhood favorite fast food chain, since others saw it as a place where celebrations of achievements and significant occasions were done.

On the other hand, Book author Marcelo Santos III shared how he would rather show the Filipino culture by attending a Filipino birthday party.

There were posts that seem to generally agree on some of the statements of the ‘hot take.’ One expressed how critical thinking was not being used by those who are criticizing the post.

One social media user pointed out the seemingly ‘privileged’ and out of touch take of the original uploader.

While the creator’s “hot take” has ignited debate, it’s important to remember that both sides of the conversation are valid. Choosing one dish over another isn’t inherently bad; nostalgic favorites certainly hold a special place in our hearts. However, we must also acknowledge that our cultural identity is rich and varied, encompassing a diverse array of flavors and experiences that contribute to the tapestry of Filipino cuisine.
