The EDSA Carousel lane is more helpful than you think

A recent Facebook video discussion on the evolving urban traffic patterns underscores the significant role of designated bus lanes in enhancing the efficiency of public transportation, offering a promising outlook to our ongoing saga on mass transportation.

The EDSA Carousel is a Metro Manila BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system, a high-capacity public transportation solution that  connects bus routes, serving median and curbside stops. Launched in 2020 due to COVID-19 capacity constraints, it is known for its efficiency, affordability, and safety.

It has been observed that buses can move through traffic efficiently, which significantly helps passengers even if they only take up one lane on the highway. However, a rising controversy has formed, with some proposing that bus lanes should be eliminated since they are not used enough. 

This controversy stems from concerns about the underutilization of the lanes and the potential impact on other road users.

The argument put forth by proponents of bus lanes in the video is that they are indispensable for maintaining a robust public transportation system. 

“These buses only take up one lane on the highway, yet they can transport hundreds of thousands of commuters,” said in the video.

As the video explained, “If you think removing the bus lane is gonna improve traffic, you’re wrong,” as it would result in “100 of 1,000 commuters stuck in traffic with you.” 

Removing bus lanes could unintentionally aggravate traffic

This viewpoint illuminates a concerning way of thinking for specific drivers. It also said that “commuters should suffer just the same as us in our cars,” indicating a preference for individual annoyance over group solutions. 

Bus lanes are supported by many motorists and motorcycle riders who agree that “the improved mass of public transport will reduce congestion on the road.”

However, detractors frequently miss the bigger picture when presenting their cases. As they watch buses “flying past them,” they erroneously think that letting individual cars into bus lanes will ease their traffic. 

As was mentioned in the video, the truth is that “if you allow one person, you’re going to allow everybody,” which will eventually result in another clogged lane.

The argument over bus lanes is a microcosm of a more extensive discussion about urban design and the necessity for group approaches to traffic issues. 

Supporting public transportation projects like bus lanes helps commuters and makes the roads more efficient and less crowded for everyone.
