TWICE’s Tzuyu makes her solo debut with EP ‘abouTZU’

3 out of 9 members of TWICE have now debuted as solo artists.

On September 6, 2024, at 1 P.M. KST, TWICE’s youngest member Tzuyu made her solo debut with her first EP, ‘abouTZU’. She is the 3rd member from the “Nation’s Girl Group” to release her own solo record, following the footsteps of Nayeon and Jihyo.

Her first solo EP, ‘abouTZU’, is a combination of the English word “about” and her name, with Tzuyu describing the album as a personal exploration of emotions and is “everything about her.”

A day prior to her solo debut, Tzuyu held a press conference talking about the record and how she wanted to “break away from her previous image.” As TWICE’s youngest member, she’s always had this “bright and cute” image. Now, she wants everyone to see a different side of her.

“I want to present a more mature, intense side of myself beyond the bright and sweet image everyone is familiar with,” she said. Tzuyu later on explained this change by saying, “I wanted to express myself more boldly in a way I hadn’t done before. I’ve performed on many stages as part of TWICE, but watching other solo artists perform made me wonder what it would be like to meet fans with my own music. That curiosity turned into a passion for a solo debut, and thankfully, it has now become a chance to show a new side of myself.”

Talking about the album’s title track, “Run Away”, which had been composed by Park Jin-young, Tzuyu shared her thoughts from the first time she heard it. “I loved it from the first listen. The melody was catchy, and the synth bass sound was really captivating. At first, I was worried about whether I could pull it off, but I felt I could offer fans something fresh.”

At the same time, she also shared the challenges she experienced while recording the song. “I paid a lot of attention to expressing the right emotions through my vocals. And with the lyrics being entirely Korean, there were challenges with pronunciation, so I had to record the song multiple times to perfect it.”

Nevertheless, Tzuyu affirmed her desire to “leave a lasting impression” with ‘abouTZU’ that “fully captures her multifaceted charms.” She said, “This album reflects everything I am, and I hope people will see me not just as TWICE’s youngest member, but as a captivating solo artist.”

‘abouTZU’ consists of six tracks, including the lead single “Run Away.” The record features BTOB’s Peniel for the song “Heartbreak in Heaven” and rapper pH-1 for the song “Lazy Baby.”

Tzuyu also wrote the lyrics for the song “Fly”, which depicts her want to no longer be held back from who she wants to be.

“Run Away” is described as a synth-pop track with nostalgia-inducing melodies, that brings listeners to the late 2000s to mid-2010s.

ONCEs went all up on social media to show their support for Tzuyu and gave her praises for an amazing solo debut.

Tzuyu’s really living up to her nickname as the “Light of Taiwan” with this solo debut. Congratulations, Tzuyu!
