Olympics commentator fired for sexist comments about Australia’s swim team

Olympics commentator Bob Ballard was fired from European TV company, Eurosport, from its coverage of the Paris Games after making sexist comments about the Australia women’s swim team.

After the Australian team won gold in the 4×100 meter freestyle relay on July 27, Ballard discussed why they seemed to take a while leaving the Paris Aquatic Center as they celebrated.

“Well, the women just finishing off. You know what women are like, hanging around, doing their makeup,” Ballard stated.

His co-host, Lizzie Simmonds instantly opposed his remarks.

“Outrageous, Bob,” Simmons stated, as Ballard laughed. “Some of the men are doing that as well,” he added.

The video of his commentary immediately went viral and the Olympics commentator was not back in the booth when the swimming competition resumed last July 28.

Eurosport announced through The Independent that during a segment of their coverage last night, commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment. As a result, he has been removed from their commentary roster with immediate effect.

Ballard is a veteran commentator who has covered multiple Olympic events since the mid-80s. In addition, he also works as a music and news presenter for BBC Local Radio.

The Olympics commentator has since issued an apology via X (formerly Twitter) for his comments.

His statement reads, “The comments I made during the Australian freestyle relay victory ceremony last Saturday have caused some offence. It was never my intention to upset or belittle anyone and, if I did, I apologise. I am a massive advocate of women’s sport.”

“I shall miss the Eurosport team, dearly and wish them all the best for the rest of the Olympics. No further comment will be issued. Thank you,” he added.
