NewJeans is set to take a well-deserved break following a successful and hectic 2 years into their stellar career.
This was announced by their agency ADOR in a detailed statement on July 23, 2024, who first congratulated the girl group on their 2nd debut anniversary and expressed their gratitude for NewJeans’ fans.
The statement also included ADOR’S position on the current plagiarism allegations against NewJeans and HYBE’s handling of the agency’s PR and legal affairs.
ADOR first said that despite all that there is to celebrate with NewJeans’ achievements in the amount of time that they have been active, they first have to “set the record straight.”
With regards to the plagiarism claims in “Bubble Gum,” ADOR had initially denied these allegations, strongly refuting by saying on behalf of the writers of the song that they did not “unlawfully use Shakatak’s composition” and requested that Shakatak and Wise Music Group give a “credible analysis report” in a previous statement.
ADOR added to this by saying the following:
“On May 21, the songwriters who wrote the music for “Bubble Gum” responded that they had never even heard of the song “Easier Said Than Done” before the complaint was raised and therefor they could not have used Shakatak’s music without permission.”
ADOR also said that they had hired two renowned musicologists from overseas to make a professional analysis, which they have included in their post (image 3).
The latter part of the statement concerns ADOR’s position on HYBE’s handling of their PR and legal dealings. ADOR criticized how the media (thanks to HYBE) have been extremely misconstruing their past reports and placing them in a bad light, and that other outlets seeming “to have a specific agenda to present us in a negative light by reporting about completely unrelated events,” unwittingly leading to the spread of false information.
They also called out HYBE for not sharing information with them first and involving an unnecessary amount of people into the problem.
“Given that legal and PR powers are disproportionately entrusted to HYBE themselves and are not at the individual label level, they have essentially given themselves the responsibility to protect NewJeans from any issue that arises. We have called time and time again for this system to be amended, and yet, things are just the same as before.”
To conclude, ADOR included their solution to the issue: the plagiarism accusations are being “looked into” by the legal teams that represent Beasts and Native Alike, the ones handling NewJeans’ music and the representative of the songwriters and publishers.
At the same time, ADOR has also started monitoring the rising issues themselves, and are doing their best to correct any misinformation they come across.
Prior to this, HYBE had said that it would be difficult to track down those who leave malicious comments on online forums, especially those on anonymous accounts. However, upon meeting with an online forum’s CEO personally, ADOR’s President Min Hee-jin found out there was a “direct line to the website that’s available for entertainment agencies to use,” and that they are able to work closely with the authorities to track those malicious commenters down.
ADOR assured fans that they will do all that is necessary to properly defend NewJeans.
The statement ended with the announcement that NewJeans will be taking a “well-deserved rest” before preparing for their “next exciting project.” In the meantime, ADOR will be providing fans with surprising content and updates in the future.
