On May 1st, tvN’s “You Quiz on the Block Ep. 242” featured Park Sung-hoon, who became well-known for the hit K-dramas “The Glory” and “Queen of Tears.” Both of his roles in these K-dramas were depicted as wealthy main antagonists.
He cleared the chaebol rumors surrounding his career, which sparked during his fame in his past drama “The Glory.” Rumors have it that he comes from a wealthy family of doctors and lawyers. However, the actor debunked them by sharing his family background.
In South Korea, chaebol is a large industrial conglomerate run and controlled by an individual or family.
“I wasn’t raised in a rich family, especially after the IMF crisis, our family condition even became more difficult. I didn’t get any support besides transportation fee when I was in high school because I was that poor,” he revealed.
He also opened up about the time he was permitted to leave after eight months of serving. When he shared the news with his mother, she made an unexpected request, which left him in tears.
The actor shared that his mother requested him not to use his leave due to extreme financial issues at home.
“Can’t you just stay there? Mom and Dad only eat rice with water and put kimchi on it. If you come home right now I need to atleast give you 5000 won but I have no money to give.” his mother requested.
The actor expressed his reaction, “I was really sad, of course; I wonder how difficult it was that she even said so… Once I hung up the call, I think I really cried a lot back then.”
Despite the hardships he faced with his family, his parents supported his dream of being an actor and told him to focus on working hard and achieving his dream even though they initially doubted his passion.
He shared that he was an introverted child, so even knowing he had such a personality, his parents supported him because his parents thought that at least he had a goal in his life.
