The British airport review and ranking website Skytrax has voted Doha’s Hamad International Airport as the world’s best airport of the year, surpassing 12-time winner Changi Airport in Singapore.
Hamad International Airport is situated in Doha, Qatar. The airport is often called the world’s most opulent and the most significant terminal complex in terms of architecture. This airport serves as Qatar Airways’ hub.
Based on customer satisfaction surveys conducted at over 500 airports, the annual ranking assesses various factors, including airport cleanliness, staff friendliness, ease of access and departure, terminal design, and dining options, among others.
After taking first place in 2021 and 2022, Hamad International Airport was named the best in the world for the third time this year. In addition, Hamad International Airport was named the Best Airport in the Middle East and the World’s Best Airport Shopping.
The Hamad International Airport has its “Orchard,” a 6,000-square-meter indoor tropical garden with 65 retail and dining venues that opened in 2022 as part of a multi-year expansion project, as one of its newest—and possibly most ambitious—features. One of the airport’s many green initiatives, it is home to over 300 trees and 25,000 plants from sustainable forests worldwide. The airport operates a waste management program that recycles 3,979 tons of organic compost annually for use as fertilizer.
According to a 2022 news release from Michael McMillan, the vice president of facilities management at the airport, “We have continued to showcase our commitment to environmental sustainability throughout our young history–from improving carbon efficiency to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and managing wastewater.”
In 2023, the airport handled over 45 million passengers, up 31% from the year before and breaking the previous record set during the FIFA World Cup.
