London’s acclaimed theatrical concert, “The Simon & Garfunkel Story,” recently made its only Asian stop at The Theatre at Solaire on March 2, 2024. The show is a heartfelt homage to the iconic American folk-rock duo and continues to tour various regions, including the UK/Ireland, North America, and Europe, until August.
Directed by Dean Elliott and co-directed by Cameron Potts, the production transports audiences back to the ’60s, tracing Simon & Garfunkel’s journey from humble beginnings to global stardom. Featuring a hybrid of theater and concert, the show highlights their timeless hits like “The Sound of Silence,” “Mrs. Robinson,” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
Through narration and musical performances, the production explored the duo’s origins as Tom & Jerry, their struggles, and eventual triumphs. Actor-musicians James William Pattison and Charles Blyth deliver captivating renditions of the duo’s classics, accompanied by a talented backing band.
Beyond their signature songs, the concert treated fans to a repertoire including “Hey Schoolgirl,” “He Was My Brother,” “Bleeker Street,” “Homeward Bound,” and “Cecilia.” The encore featured unforgettable performances of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” and “The Boxer,” leaving the audience enthralled.
Despite their eventual split in 1970, Simon & Garfunkel’s reunion concert in 1981 at Central Park showcased their enduring legacy, marked by over 10 Grammy Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Presented by the Concert Republic, “The Simon & Garfunkel Story” in Manila offered a nostalgic journey through the duo’s musical evolution, capturing their profound impact.
