Carmina and Zoren Legaspi’s remarks on relationships and women’s appearance resurface, called out on social media

In February, Zoren Legaspi and Carmina Villaroel’s views on relationships and other things resurfaced on Facebook and TikTok, which may now deem to be questionable.

In an old interview with the Legaspi family on Kris TV, Carmina Villaroel, Zoren’s wife, revealed that she became interested in working out and sports due to her husband and children’s active lifestyle.

After her statement, Zoren commented, “Tsaka usapan namin iyon, divorce na ‘pag tumaba siya [besides, we talked about that, we will divorce when she gets fat].”

He implied that weight gain could lead to divorce and suggested it might be a reason why some men cheat, a sentiment not shared by Carmina and host Kris Aquino.

Zoren further explained his belief, emphasizing the importance of physical attraction for maintaining love. [When he courted you, he found you beautiful, which was the reason why he pursued you. So, if there’s no longer physical attraction– you gained weight or lack food discipline, love will fade away].”

Aside from Zoren, Carmina’s controversial stance on relationships one year ago has also been criticized by netizens as she posed negative questions about how women present themselves.

So, ‘yon na nga, nag-iba na ang ihip ng hangin, iyong talagang ano, ang kapal magmake up, hanggang dito iyong tube, kulang na lang maghubad na. Iyong gano’n, so anong reaction mo? [So, that’s it, the wind has changed, the make-up is heavy, the tube top is too short. That’s it, so what’s your reaction?]” asking Gelli de Belen her reaction if his son is in relationship with the describe type of woman.

Both Carmina and Zoren have faced criticism from social media users for their views.

To give them the benefit of the doubt, Zoren made his statement years ago, while Carmina made hers in 2022. They may (or may not) have changed their mindsets over time.

However, it’s widely understood that their statements are not widely accepted by contemporary society. What they expressed could be interpreted as shaming those who don’t conform to their standards, ridiculing them for falling short. Gaining weight, wearing makeup, and dressing in what some might consider revealing clothes are not inherently “ugly” or disrespectful, and individuals shouldn’t be made to feel ashamed or labeled for not conforming to those ‘beauty standards.’ It’s normal, and women should have the freedom to express themselves however they want.

As of this writing, the couple has not issued any comments or statements addressing the controversy.
