Lenovo’s solid gaming experience with their Legion line just got more powerful with the Legion Pro 7i

Gamers are growing up, and their growth–not just as active videogame hobbyists, but also as professionals in different fields—means they would need more power on top of what is already powerful to help them juggle their passion, profession, and other forms of interests.

This is where the Legion Pro 7i 161RX8H comes in: A high-end laptop in Lenovo’s established gaming line, the Legion series. It comes with impressive specs that not only performs well for gaming, but also for work and other lines of passion.

Here’s an honest look at the Pros and Cons of this gaming laptop.

The Pros:

The Shell

The chassis design combines metal alloy (back monitor panel) and plastic (keyboard and other hardware), which gives it its classic sleek Legion look that’s an absolute head turner. It can also open to an almost 180-degree, which comes in handy for a lot of users.

Powerful Specs

The Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 161RX8H is equipped with an Intel Core i9-13900HX processor, which goes beast mode in terms of performance. It can handle loads of multiple applications, browsers and tabs all opened and working at the same time, which is highly suitable for both gaming and productivity tasks that are hardware intensive.

It also has the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 with 12GB of GDDR6 VRAM that works wonders for delivering outstanding gaming performance. Speaking of gaming performance, the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 161RX8H also comes with an effective cooling system, which is a must for any laptop that handles hardware-intensive applications or games. In our test run, the Legion Coldfront 5.0 cooling system helped maintain performance when the team tried to use the laptop for demanding tasks and games.

This laptop also features 32GB of DDR5-5600 RAM, which provides more than enough memory for gaming and other tasks. Games and applications also load quickly because of the 1TB SSD M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0×4 NVMe storage that enables fast data access.

Striking Display

The Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 161RX8H comes with a 16-inch WQXGA display in matte finish. It has a resolution of 2560×1600, which shows sharp imaging, and its 500 nits of brightness really brings out the appeal of vibrant games. Even when viewing at almost impossible angles, you still get crisp imaging and colors.

It also has a high refresh rate of 240Hz, making it ideal for gaming with smooth visuals and it supports G-SYNC for tear-free gaming.

Input, Connectivity, and Accessories

It’s almost rare at this point in time to be offered a laptop that has an abundance of ports, but we have the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 161RX8H filling up that demand. While there are only 1 or 2 on each side of the laptop, the magic is really on the backside, with multiple ports that can handle USB Type A, HDMI, USB-Type C, and even LAN.

Also, this laptop comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack. SO, YES TO THAT, because like what we always say, not everyone is in love with Bluetooth headphones.

The keyboard, which is RGB backlit, does its job and functions well under different circumstances (gaming, working, etc), although the layout takes some getting used to. It has a full keyboard layout so it feels comfortable using it for long periods. The same goes for the touchpad, however, it’s positioned a little to the left side so that part being ergonomic will differ from person to person.

The Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 161RX8H comes with a toolkit for the keyboard, which includes with a specially-made Lenovo detachment tool, ceramic keycaps, and keyboard scissors, so you can personally swap and fix, just in case.

The Cons:

Size and Portability

One would think that the metal alloy and plastic combination of the laptop’s shell will give it a lighter weight, but no. Everything about this is heavy–the laptop is undeniably on the heavy side, weighing at about 6 lbs. So, one has to factor that in on the portability angle. Even the charger is huge and heavy.

Additionally, with the way the shell of the laptop is designed, there are just too many nooks and crannies where crumbs and dusts can get in. So, any user who’s particular about maintaining the sleekness of a laptop will definitely see this as a micro setback.

Also–and again–like any other laptop with aluminum chassis, expect that dreaded buzzing sensation during charging when not properly grounded.

Battery Life and Charging

While the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 161RX8H is equipped with a powerful, large 99 WHr battery, it doesn’t translate to optimum performance as it surprisingly drains faster than expected. Our test run only gave us around 6 hours of relaxed usage, so imagine that while gaming. And, despite the availability of USB-C, unless you have access to an accessory that can level with the 330W charging pull of its charger, there’s really no way you can utilize portable charging devices for this. You’d likely need to be near a power source for extended gaming or working.

Conclusion

The Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 161RX8H is a top-of-the-line gaming laptop with powerful specs, impressive display, and good input options. Perhaps, the only significant drawbacks are its weight and battery life that is less stellar than expected, however, for a high-performance gaming laptop such as the Legion Pro 7i 161RX8H, these are almost forgivable.

If you’re willing to invest in a premium gaming experience, this laptop is likely to deliver.
