It was a magical night as stars and creators gathered to promote their film “A Very Good Girl” at the film’s mediacon on August 23, 2023. Present in the media conference are stars Kathryn Bernardo, Dolly De Leon, Chie Filomeno, Kaori Oinuma, Gillian Vicencio, and Jake Ejercito with the creative team behind the film including director Petersen Vargas.

A stunning fashion show kickstarted the event that led to the premiere of the official trailer for the film.

Mystery and teasing were the running themes of the night as everyone was trying to piece together what the film was really about. The cast and the creatives were heavily tight-lipped to prevent giving off spoilers so as not to ruin the experience for the audience.

For Kathryn Bernardo who portrays “Philo,” they asked her what she wanted to do since this is her comeback movie under Star Cinema. She said “gusto ko dark.” They took note of what she said and pitched her projects that have a dark genre and she said “let’s do it.”

When it was initially pitched to anyone from the cast it wasn’t as dark as it seems according to Kathryn as it is still very glossy with the peg line in the earlier stages of development.

Director Petersen Vargas said that “Star Cinema pushed their boundaries into telling stories. I felt that we were given creative freedom. The first time I saw the material I said ‘gagawin natin ‘to?’ We were pumped up to give something different.

When talking about creating the film going into a darker genre, he added “I accepted the challenge kasi for me it’s a miracle to even birth a film nowadays. With this team pa, I love that it happened. And then working with them [the cast], the way I work, I always tell my producers that I am not really an actor’s director as they say. I’m not that kind of director who would say ‘eto backstory mo’, no. I entrust the character to them. Maintindihan lang nila yung pelikula na ginagawa namin, yun na. Parang the magic happens, I’m just there to see them unfold.”

This film somehow serves as a love letter to the writer, Dominique Mancol. She stated, “this is the thesis of my life for the past 25 years of my life. I was always the youngest person in the room. I was always told what to do. So this is me putting my foot down, making my voice heard, that you know this is how a young person see the world, this is what it’s like to be a woman, and this is what it’s like to be a human being in the post pandemic economy but I didn’t wanna tell it in a completely depressing way.”

She added by describing this film as “a dark comedy, it has a lot of my Gen Z girly energy, it’s sassy, it’s fun, and it’s snappy but the most important thing is nangangain ng dinosaur ang story na ‘to.” Very intriguing to say the least.

To end the night, the poster for the movie was revealed.

“A Very Good Girl” premieres in cinemas nationwide on September 27.
