Charles Martinet steps back as the voice of Mario after 32 years, moving on to new role as ‘Mario Ambassador’

Charles Martinet, the iconic voice behind the well-loved video game character, “Mario”, will be stepping back from being the voice actor and will now serve as a “Mario Ambassador.”

Nintendo has released a statement on X (Twitter) that Martinet, the original voice talent of Mario since 1991 will be the character’s newest ambassador. With this information, the former voice actor will travel around the globe and interact with fans of the gaming giant. The full tweet is as follows:

“Charles Martinet has been the original voice of Mario in Nintendo games for a long time, as far as Super Mario 64. Charles is now moving into the brand-new role of Mario Ambassador. With this transition, he will be stepping back from rerecording character voices for our games, but he’ll continue to travel the world sharing the joy of Mario and interacting with you all! It has been an honor working with Charles to help bring Mario to life for so many years and we want to thank and celebrate him. Please keep an eye out for a special video message from Shigeru Miyamoto and Charles himself, which we will post at a future date.”

Martinet is not part of the forthcoming Super Mario Bros. Wonder game to be released on the 20th of October. Soon after, Martinet tweeted the post with a heartfelt message.

Martinet became the voice actor for the Nintendo character after getting details of the audition at the tradeshow where he had talked to people as a plumber. He began narrating the piece with an Italian-American accent, in a friendly tone to cater to young audiences.

His first-ever video game appearance was seen in Mario Teaches Typing in 1994. However, his voice-overs rose to fame following Super Mario 64 in 1996.
Good luck on your new journey, Mr. Charles!
