Can’t get rid of your Threads account without deleting Instagram? Here’s a way out

Meta gave avid social media users another delight with its new app designed to rival Elon Musk’s Twitter. Threads, launched on July 6, easily became the talk of the town as over 10 million users have signed up within the app’s first few operational hours, including a significant number of brands and celebrities.

With this newborn craze, users can’t help but get their own taste of the Twitter-like text-based platform where people can have real-time conversations.

Users can log into Threads through their existing Instagram accounts. To keep the convenience, their details and credentials are automatically carried over to the new app, while maintaining the freedom of users to personalize their accounts and follow other Threads users.

The close link between Instagram and Threads may appear harmless at first glance. However, this brings about a new issue with regard to account deletion. As stated in Threads’ Supplemental Privacy Policy, profile deactivation is possible at any time, but since Threads profiles are linked to users’ Instagram accounts, account deletion entails “ deleting your Instagram account” and “may be deleted at any time.” Hence, many see this as a “trap.”

The matter has become the subject of clamor online, especially for those who want out of the ‘trap.’ At this point, Threads users can only hope that an alteration in the app’s programming is eventually made to save them.

Fortunately, this has already reached the Threads team, and said that they have been looking for a way to “delete your Threads profile separately.” Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri stated in a post on Threads that they have been actively seeking a solution to address this demand.

So, at this point, what you can do to get rid of your Threads account without losing your Instagram account is to deactivate it.
