Man dies after pin from his grandfather’s antique grenade has been pulled, also injures 2 others

A father died after someone pulled the pin from their grandfather’s antique grenade, injuring his two children as well, at their home in Indiana on Saturday, May 20.

According to the Lake Country Sheriff’s Office in Indiana, the family was looking through their grandfather’s belongings in their gated community home in Lakes of the Four Seasons, Indiana, when they discovered a hand grenade.

“Someone reportedly pulled the pin on the device, and it detonated,” Sheriff Oscar Martinez wrote in a statement.

The deceased, identified as 47-year-old Bryan Niedert, was found unresponsive at the scene and was pronounced dead, as stated in a news report.

The incident also hospitalized his 17-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter, both with shrapnel wounds.

According to the sheriff’s department, the area was secured after the Porter County Bomb Squad arrived to check for additional explosive devices.

Investigations are still ongoing to determine the cause of the incident, “Investigators are still trying to determine elements of the case, including, but not limited to: whether the device may have self-detonated due to its age or other factors, whether the pin was pulled, or whether any other circumstances may have been involved,” the sheriff’s department said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives also said in a statement that they’re supporting the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and their other partners in the investigation.
