The original Tamagotchi is back and it’s bringing all our ‘90s memories back with it

Back when smartphones and other gadgets weren’t even invented yet, Tamagotchi used to be the ‘90s cool kid’s favorite digital toy. And before mobile apps that let us play and interact with virtual pets, Tamagotchis allowed us keep up with our husbandry skills even without an internet connection, all in a handy keychain.

For those who were not born during the peak of its hype, Tamagotchis are these needy digital pets that eat, sleep, and poop just like your regular pet. Those who may think that Tamagotchis never went away in the first place, and have probably seen one recently, would probably be wondering: What’s with the “comeback” then?

The catch is Japanese toymaker Bandai is bringing back the original 1996 version of Tamagotchi in celebration of its 20th anniversary.

It’s definitely giving us all the nostalgia feels! And 20 years you say? Thanks for making us feel old.

While the graphics remain the same, the difference is the 20th anniversary edition is way smaller than the original one.

The original Tamagotchi which was released in Japan in 1996 immediately gained a global following. It was considered a cult toy, and was sold for just $17.99 (PhP 900.85), according to Mashable. Tamagotchi these days are now priced for as high as $130 (PhP 6,509.75).

Although the new Tamagotchi is only available in Japan, you can still get your own at Amazon Japan for $17.36 (Php 869.30) — yes, almost the same as its original price.
